Turkish Classical Music Ensemble Middle East Music Concert: Turkish Classical Music Ensemble Friday, May 6, 2005 Starting at 4:00pm and ending at 5:15pm Bechtel International Center Patio and Assembly Room Middle East Collection, Stanford University Libraries The Turkish Classical Music Ensemble of San Francisco was established in 2002 by Hank Levin. Its mission is to give Bay Area musicians and singers an opportunity to learn and perform this extremely rich and diverse repertoire, and become familiar with its unique modal melodic system called makam, and its unusual rhythms. Turkish classical music includes instrumental secular music of the Ottoman courts, historical and contemporary art songs, devotional songs from various Sufi traditions, instrumental sacred suites associated with the Mevlevi (whirling dervishes), dance music from the tradition of Ottoman dancing boys, and occasional folk music incorporated into classical style.   In today's performance, the ensemble is represented by director Hank Levin, performing instrumentals and accompaniment on oud and ney, and by Natalie Hicks on vocals and bendir. They will perform courtly art songs and Sufi devotional songs from the Mevlevi tradition.  Free! Everyone welcome! David Giovacchini, dggiova@stanford.edu Open to all. Kaghaz Ke Phool is unrelenting in its narration of its protagonist's tragedies and later, in his surly acceptance of the same."   Country: India Runtime: 148 min Language: Hindi, with English subtitles Cast: Guru Dutt, Waheeda Rehman, Naaz, Johnny Walker, Mahesh Kaul, Veena Cinematography: V.K.Murthy Lyrics: Kaifi Azmi Music: S.D.Burman   Tuesday Nights: Indian Cinema at the I-Center   Every Tuesday night, we will be screening a movie from a celebrated Indian movie director.
