Speaker: Abbas Milani (Prof. of Political Science, Hoover Inst.)
From the advent of Zoroastrian religion to the extended Biblical account of
Persia's role in the liberation of Jews, from Herodotus' Histories to the
nineteenth century Romantics infatuation with Iran, the country once called
Persia has played a singular role in world history and the evolution of our
common human heritage. A brief survey of the most important moments of that
rich
history is the focus of Wisdom from the land of Sophie.

14. April 19 Tuesday, "Diary of a Teenage Girl", Egyptian film
Middle East Film Series: Diary of a Teenage Girl (Egypt, 2002)
Tuesday, April 19, 2005
Starting at 7:30pm and ending at 10pm
Bechtel International Center Assembly Room
Middle East Collection, Stanford University Libraries
Director Inas al-Daghidi's stylish look into the innermost thoughts and
fantasies of a typical Egyptian teenage girl was a box office blockbuster,
but caused great consternation among moral authorities in Egypt. It was
unthinkable that pure Egyptian girls could have such dreams about "boys".
Of course, this controversy only fuelled the film's box office take, as
everyone rushed to the theater to see what the fuss was all about. Instead
of the decadence and depravity denounced by Egyptian moral pundits, Western
audiences will find the teenage girl's dreams sweet, romantic and a little
callow. Ah, youth! Come see for yourself in this perfect example of modern
popular Egyptian cinema.

This week, Gridt will present her Favorite Film "The Celebration", 1998 (105
min), in Danish with English subtitles.
A winner of the Cannes Special Jury Prize - 1998.
The film tells the story of a 60th birthday party held in honor of a
wealthy Danish family's patriarch at his country estate. Friends and family
arrive, room assignments are made, and all gather expectantly for the

this story.
