Each session will include an introduction, listening to music or watching videos, and sometimes reading from historical documents. Plant Native Bunch Grasses on Stanford Campus Saturday, January 22nd, 9am - 1pm Stanford Campus We're aiming to plant another 20,000 bunch grass seedlings. Our Campus Drive planting site is apt for demonstrating the beauty and functionality of native grasses. The work is relatively light and the results are immediately visible and very satisfying. This is a great activity for groups of friends to work as teams. We will meet on Lomita Drive near the intersection with Campus Drive. Parking is available at the meeting place. The Peril of America's Middle East Policies Tuesday, January 25th, 7pm - 9pm Room 40, Building 420 A 22 year veteran of the U.S. Congress, Paul Findley (R-IL) is most remembered for speaking out against the powerful pro-Israeli lobby, which has been described as "the 700 pound gorilla in Washington", and its role in driving U.S. foreign policy. Paul Findley has written many books including "They Dare to Speak Out: People and Institutions Confront Israel's Lobby", "Deliberate Deceptions: Facing the Facts About the U.S.-Israeli Relationship", founded The Council for the National Interest, a non-partisan grassroots organization that advocates a new direction for U.S. Middle East policy, and has appeared on numerous programs including NBC's Meet the Press, The Today Show, and CNN Crossfire. This day is reserved on the University calendar to reflect and pay tribute to the Stanford family and to recognize their achievements in founding our University that bears their name. A highlight of the Founders' Day activities will be a speech from one undergraduate student and one graduate student. Once again, in hopes of increasing student awareness and participation in Founders' Day, President Hennessy has decided to provide each student speaker with a $1,000 cash award. A Founders' Day student committee has developed a two-stage process to determine which students will have the honor of speaking at Founders' Day. The first stage requires each student to submit a copy of the actual speech by 12 noon on March 18 to the Dean of Students Office (on the second floor of Tresidder Memorial Union). The Founders' Day student committee will review all completed submissions regarding content, and will then invite a small group of finalists to deliver their speech in front of the committee as the second and final stage of the process. Speech Criteria: 1. Speeches should not take more than five minutes to deliver. 2. Speeches can address any of the following elements: *Historical background of the Stanford family. *Historical background of the founding of Stanford University. *What Stanford means to you. *How Stanford has impacted your life. *How Stanford impacts the world. Speeches will be judged on their overall content. Judges will be looking for interesting, creative, thoughtful, and passionate speeches.
